Namibian Economic Growth Summit 2019

- featured project

The Walvis GasPort team was pleased to be invited to present this important project at the Namibian Economic Growth Summit 2019. The project will bring domestic and foreign investment to the Erongo Region and provide energy security to Namibia.

Walvis GasPort is an innovative development that will establish a Natural Gas industry hub in Walvis Bay, Namibia aimed at decreasing dependence on coal, HFO and diesel for power generation as well as providing a much needed stimulus for economic growth in the Southern African region.

The region has been largely dependent on coal as its primary energy source, but with the focus on cleaner energy, and on diversifying energy sources to ensure sustainability, the region’s power sector development plans strongly support the development of renewable energy sources along with gas-to-power technology.

As natural gas is becoming increasingly competitive, the demand from IPPs as well as industrial and domestic consumers is growing exponentially - demand is already outstripping supply. Countries such as South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia are actively looking to develop their gas-to-power markets adding further demand pressure.

The stage is therefore set for a strong player to emerge and kick-start a Natural Gas supply network in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

Walvis GasPort’s innovative design, based on a Floating Storage Unit (FSU), a Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) carrier, enabled by a state-of-the-art on-shore regasification, will deliver cost-effective, clean energy and fuel to state, industry, and public clients.

Industrial Gas

Walvis Bay is being positioned as a trade hub for the SADC region. Walvis is already linked to neighbouring countries through the Trans-Kalahari, Trans-Cunene, Trans-Oranje, and Trans-Caprivi corridors, and the free trade zone, the Walvis Bay Export Processing Zone (EPZ) will boost the area’s trade potential.

The Walvis Bay area is poised to grow into an industry and energy driver for the region.

The availability of natural gas will mean low-cost, high-availability fuel for electricity and process heat for the industries in the area.
